The present study deals with the pharmacognostic, preliminary phytochemical investigation of Raphanus sativus, Linn. belonging to family Cruciferae. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble antioxidant vitamin having important nutritional and health benefits. Adequate consumption of fruits, vegetables and their juices with high vitamin C content and antioxidant capacity result in improved health, reduced risk of chronic diseases, optimal nutrition and general well-being. Thus, it is essential that vitamin C content in food items, intended to provide its supplement, is determined and its amount stated on labels of packages. The objective of the present study was to determine and compare the vitamin C content of fresh and commercial juices made from mango and orange. Fruits and packed juices were purchased from the local market of Mekelle city, Ethiopia. Iodine titration method was employed to determine the vitamin C content of test sample juices. In this study, the phytochemical analysis took place for solvent extracts (petroleum ether, chloroform) and essential oils. Maceration method and hydrodistillation were used for the solvent extraction and essential oil extraction respectively. Solvent extract was studied for phytochemical analysis and antibacterial activities. The antibacterial activity of a solvent extract of Lantana camara L. leaf was investigated against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (gram -), E. coli (gram-) and Staphylococcus aureus (gram+). The paper disk agar diffusion methods tested the antibacterial activity inhibition of growth. Phytochemical analysis showed that solvent extract (petroleum ether, chloroform) contains more constituents than the essential oil of Lantana camara L. leaf. This difference might come from the volatile constituents and non-volatile constituents of this plant. Solvent extracts gave a positive test for most phytochemical analysis, but the oil gave a positive test only for carbohydrate and terpenoids. A phytotherapeutic approach to modern drug development can provide many invaluable drugs from traditional medicinal plants. Medicinal plants have been considered as an important therapeutic aid for alleviating ailment of humankind. Numerous plants and polyherbal formulations are used for the treatment of liver diseases. This present investigation was aimed at assessing the hepatoprotective activity of aqueous, ethanol and acetone extract of Sesbania grandiflora leaves against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver damage in Albino rats. Silymarin as a standard drug for comparing the activity. The activity was assessed by comparing the biochemical parameters in serum levels such as serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase, serum glutamate oxalate transaminase, total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase of plant extracts treated group with carbon tetrachloride treated animals. Results showed, ethanolic extract treated group showed highly significant activity (P<0.001), whereas aqueous extract treated group has shown the significant (P<0.01) action but less compared with ethanolic extract, acetone treated group showed moderate action.
