Antioxidants play an essential role in the inhibition of the oxidative damage of the biomolecules. Flavonoids are known as potent antioxidants and are present in abundance in many of the fruits and vegetables besides being present in a large number of medicinal botanicals. A quantitative analysis of the antioxidant activity of quercetin, luteolin, kaempherol and taxifolin belonging to the flavonoid class of compounds, has been obtained by the determination of the structures, energetics and global reactivity descriptors in both neutral and charged states using Density Functional Theory. A comparison of the antioxidant property of these flavonoids, with those of the vitamins viz. vitamin A and vitamin E molecules, reveals that these flavonoid molecules are better candidates for electronic charge transfer to the ROS and hence possesses greater antioxidant activity. To probe the preferred site of reactivity, the Fukui function; fk- was also evaluated for each of these antioxidant molecules. The trends observed in various reactivity descriptors along with Fukui indices indicates that the substitution of B-ring and the C2-C3...

The purpose of this research work was to develop and evaluate matrix-type transdermal patches of Ketoprofen. Employing different ratios of hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymers by a solvent evaporation technique. The physicochemical compatibility of the drug and the polymers was studied by Infrared Spectroscopy. The results suggested no physicochemical incompatibility between the drug and the polymers. Seven formulations (Consisting of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose E5 and ethylcellulose in the ratios of10:0, 0:10, 1:9, 2:8, 3:7, 4:6, 5:5 (F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6, F7) were prepared. All formulations carried dimethyl sulfoxide as a penetration enhancer and dibutyl phthalate as a plasticizer in chloroform and methanol (1:1) as the solvent system. The prepared TDDS were evaluated for in-vitro release, moisture absorption, moisture loss, and mechanical properties. The diffusion studies were performed by using modified Franz diffusion cells. Patch coded as F1 (HPMC alone) showed maximum release of 95.526 ± 0.982% in 8 h, whereas F2 (EC alone) showed maximum release of 67.078 ± 1.875% in 24 h and combination of polymers F7 (5:5)...

A simple and rapid method for the determination of mexiletine in pharmaceutical preparations was developed and validated using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The proposed method was based on electrochemical oxidation of mexiletine at a platinum electrode in an acetonitrile solution containing 0.1M LiCIO4. The well-defined an oxidation peak was observed at +1.11 V. The calibration curve was linear for mexiletine at the concentration range of 5-70 µg/mL for LSV method. Intra- and inter-day precision values for mexiletine were less than 2.73, and accuracy (relative error) was better than 3.89%. The mean recovery of mexiletine was 100.1% for a pharmaceutical preparation. No interference was found excipient at the selected assay conditions. The method was found to be specific, precise and accurate. The method was applied for the quality control of commercial mexiletine capsule form to quantify the drug and to check the formulation content...

It was evaluated the damage caused by Bruchus pisorum on the germination ability of pea forage cultivars. Result of damage in seeds with parasitized larva was significant decrease of the germination by 16.4% percentage points, the length and weight of primary radicle by 16.8 and 24.5%, the length and weight of plumule by 12.3 and 14.1%, the vigor index of primary radicle and plumule by 32.5 and 32.8% as well as the germination index by 17.4%. The inhibitory effect was 17.8%. Essential significant changes regarding the studied parameters were found for damaged seeds with bruchid emergence hole. There the germination decrease by 58.3% percentage points, the length and weight of primary radicle by 34.1 and 36.2%, the vigor index of primary radicle and plumule by 81.1 and 82.1% as well as the germination index by 83.1%. The inhibitory effect was on average 58.3%. The damaged seeds with parasitoid emergence hole provided the better possibility for growth, development of plants and stable yields. As tolerant to damage by pest distinguished...

Strobilanthes sessilis Nees is a small perennial shrub, found on Kas plateau of the Western Ghats in India. Its standardized Marathi name is Mal Karvy. This shrub belongs to the genus Strobilanthes which was first scientifically described by Nees in the 19th century. Scientific information on its Pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry is very scant. Hence, the current study describes some Pharmacognostical, Physiochemical and Phytochemical investigations undertaken on the leaves of one of the species of the genus Strobilanthes, namely Strobilanthes sessilis Nees belonging to the family Acanthaceae. The present investigation was undertaken for research with an objective of drawing attention on those scarce species as well as a reference for further scientific...
