Background: Swertia chirayita (Roxb. ex Flem.) Karsten known as Kiratatikta in Ayurveda, the Indian indigenous health system, is used for various ailments like liver disorders, diabetes, fever, worm infestation, and others. Due to huge demand and non-availability, other Swertia species and other herbs are used as substitutes/adulterants for Swertia chirayita (Roxb. ex Flem.) Karsten. Hence, the present study is carried out with the objective of characterizing the macroscopic, microscopic features, the physicochemical and chromatographic profile of the herb. Material & Methods: Pharmacognostical parameters like microscopy, physico-chemical, phytochemical and chromato-graphic investigation for the whole plant of Swertia chirayita (Roxb. ex Flem.) Karsten was done using standard methodology. Results: The chief macroscopic features of the whole plant are wrinkled roots, quadrangular stem in the upper portion, leaves brittle, and presence of flowers and fruits. In powder microscopy, fragments of the epidermis with stomata, resin containing cells, pitted parenchyma, cells forming epidermis of fruit, parenchyma cells, pitted fibers, fragments of cotyledon, endosperm cells, sclereids were the key features. Phytochemical analysis revealed the...

The present study was undertaken to develop gluten-free biscuits from the processed composite flour. Composite flour was prepared using teff millet flour (TF), navy bean flour (NF), and watermelon seeds flour (WF). Three variation were formulated such as, A (TF: NF: WF = 45:45:10), B (TF: NF: WF = 55:35:10), C (TF: NF: WF = 65:25:10) respectively. These biscuits were evaluated for rheological properties such as physical (Thickness, diameter and spread ratio), textural (Hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, and gumminess), and sensory attributes. This article focuses on the use of composite flour to produce gluten-free biscuits. Some functional properties were assessed, namely water absorption capacity (WAC), oil absorption capacity (OAC), emulsion capacity (EC), foaming capacity (FC), and gelation capacity (GC). The sensory evaluation of biscuits on 9 points hedonic scale revealed that A variant was more acceptable than variant B and C. Gluten-free biscuits were developed in this study have functional characteristics, providing added value to a waste product. Furthermore, the biscuits were suitable for celiac disease with acceptable quality and...

Oxidative stress is incriminated in many human diseases such as cancer, diabetes, ischemia, rheumatoid arthritis, neurodegenerative diseases, etc. The extracts from plants could be used to discovering the new antioxidant product. In the aim to evaluate the antioxidant activity of fractions of Uvaria comperei stem extract, the fractions of the stem extract obtained by vacuum chromatography from Uvaria comperei were screened for their in vitro antioxidant properties. Total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, and phytochemical screening were also determined. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH and ORAC assays, whereas total phenolic and total flavonoid contents were determined using folin-ciocalteu method and aluminum chloride assay, respectively. The phytochemical constituents were assessed using standard methods. In the DPPH scavenging activity assay, the EC50 values of 6.03 µg/Ml to > 2000 µg/mL were obtained from the fractions. The fraction F16 showed the strongest scavenging activity with EC50 of 6.03 µg/mL near to the EC50 value of catechin (3.57 µg/mL). All the fractions presented the antioxidant activity with ORAC assay; however, the...

Information from ethnomedicine suggests that Diospyros mespiliformis possesses antiulcer properties. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate its gastroprotective activity. The gastroprotective activity of the leaves aqueous extract of D. mespiliformis was evaluated by three experimental models of gastric ulcers in mice, namely: HCl/ethanol, HCl/ethanol with indomethacin pre-treatment and indomethacin (p. o). Ulcerated surface, ulcer index, and mucus mass were recorded. A qualitative phytochemical analysis of the extract was carried out. The administration of D. mespiliformis extract prevented the formation of gastric lesions against the necrotizing agents. For HCl/ethanol induction, the extract at 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg dose-dependently inhibited ulcer formation of 28.36, 29.19 and 35.82%, respectively. Indomethacin pre-treatment reduced the preventive effect of the extract to 19.69 and 28.24% at 200 and 400 mg/kg, respectively. As for indomethacin induction, the extract at 200 mg/kg showed the most important ulcer inhibition (88.13%). For all three induction models, a significant increase in mucus secretion between 44.75 and 121.34% was observed. D. mespiliformis could prevent the formation of...

The objective of the present study is to develop the pharmacognostic and phytochemical profiles of Ruellia tuberosa L. leaf and root. The present study considers the detail investigation of macroscopy, microscopy, preliminary qualitative phytochemical analysis, physicochemical evaluations, and chromatography profiling. The microscopical investigation was adopted to identify the cellular powder characters of leaves and roots, including diacytic stomata, few sessile glandular trichomes, profuse oil globules, exfoliating cork, few small schizogenous oil cavities, cystolith, etc. Physicochemical parameters reveal the data of quality, purity while phytochemical screening reflects the presence of various secondary metabolites. The chromatographic fingerprint data represent the authenticity of plant sample. Data obtained from botanical and chemical screening in combination may be considered as standard for identification and authentication of leaves and roots and may be helpful in developing pharmacopoeial...
