Cordia macleodii is an 8-10 m high small-sized tree belongs to the family Boraginaceae and commonly known as Dahiphalas or Dahiman ped. Many studies indicate that the plants of Cordial macleodii show analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, wound healing, hepatoprotective, acute toxicity, antihypertensive, and anti-oxidant activity. Cordia macleodii contains various types of bioactive compounds like amino acids, alkaloids, carbohydrates, flavonoids, glycosides and tannins, phenols, steroids, terpenoids, and resin, which play an important role in health management. An extensive survey of literature has been made on Cordia macleodii using published review and research articles in journals, botanical textbooks and scientific...

The aim of this study was to evaluate antisecretory and antioxidant activities of the leaves aqueous extract of Boscia angustifolia (LAEBA) on gastric ulcers induced in male rats. LAEBA at the doses of 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg were tested on three models of gastric ulcers, namely: pylorus ligation, pylorus ligation + histamine, and pylorus ligation + carbamylcholine. Some parameters of oxidative stress (malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and reduced glutathione (GSH)) were evaluated in stomach’s homogenates. The qualitative phytochemical screening of LAEBA was carried out. Antisecretory screening showed that LAEBA at 500 mg/kg significantly decreased (p<0.01) gastric acidity (8.06 mEq/l) compared to the negative control (14.07 mEq/l), with a significant reduction (p<0.001) of gastric volume (1.30 ml) compared to the negative control (5.12 ml), as well as a reduction of pepsin activity (64.64%). These variations were similar to pylorus ligation + histamine and pylorus ligation + carbamylcholine models. LAEBA at all the doses induced a significant reduction (p< 0.05) of ulcerated surface correlated with an increase...

Genus Memecylon belonging to the family Melastomataceae is a large shrub or a small tree native to Western Ghats of India. Memecylon species are reported to show various biological activities and are also used as medication in herpes virus infection. RNases and proteases are involved in the replication of herpes simplex virus (HSV). The present study was taken up to screen RNase and protease (trypsin and thrombin) inhibitors in different solvent extracts of Memecylon species viz., M. umbellatum, M. malabaricum, M. wightii, M. edule and M. talbotianium. The methanol extract of the leaves of Memecylon species was observed to strongly inhibit RNase, trypsin, and thrombin functions in a dose-dependent manner. The percent inhibition of RNase activity ranged from 53-84% in 50 ug/mL of plant extracts. The highest inhibition was observed in M. malabaricum and M. wightii for RNase. Similarly, for trypsin the percent inhibition ranged from 55-68% in 1 mg/mL of plant extracts. Highest inhibition was observed in M. malabaricum, M. wightii, and M. talbotianium. For thrombin the percent...

Plants are the major sources of hepatoprotective drugs and formulations, and this is the reason that their phytoconstituents are in great demand commercially. These drugs act prophylactically for the wellbeing of the liver as well as can cure an ailing liver. The liver is the largest solid organ and gland present in the human body. While it plays a major role in various metabolic reactions of the body, it can get damaged due to various reasons. The reasons can be consumption of excessive alcohol, jaundice, an overdose of allopathic drugs like Paracetamol etc. Lot of scientists have worked to find out the chemical constituents present in the hepatoprotective herbs and their actions on the liver. All the studies carried out by the team of scientists have been compiled in this article; therefore, the present review highlights all the important hepatoprotective herbs, their reported major constituents, and their effect on the liver. The herbs which are included in this article are Silybum marianum (Milk Thistle), Allium sativum (Garlic), Glycyrrhiza glabra...

Cervical cancer is a highly prevalent global disease among females and currently available treatments are nevertheless restricted and have substantial adverse effects. Plants may be a rich source of molecules with therapeutic potentials, such as Campomanesia aureas O. Berg, Myrtaceae, a native species from the South of Brazil with few data regarding its biological effects. In this study, we investigated the chemical composition and antineoplastic potential in-vitro of the essential oil (EO) of C. aureas leaves in human cervical cancer cells (SiHa), as well as its effect in the viability of non-tumoral cells (HaCat). CG-MS analysis reveals that the EO is rich in oxygenated sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes and MTT colorimetric assay shows that it significantly inhibits the viability of the SiHa cell line at different concentrations. Besides, the EO reduced the colony-forming capacity of the tumor cell line, and the ratio between the IC50 values of cell lines demonstrated a promising selectivity index for C. aurea EO. Therefore, the EO could be a potential source of new anticancer...
