Growing awareness and interest towards traditional health care system coupled with phenomenal increase in demand and trade of medicinal plant has caused severe threat to the very existence of medicinal plants, which can be gauged from the fact that a number of important medicinal plants are becoming threatened or extinct, and an increasing number of species are being substituted in herbal preparations. There is, therefore, a need to strike a balance between conservation and use. It is imperative to evolve viable strategies to conserve the surviving populations and their genetic resource of critically important species to avoid further loss. Further, spurt demand for herbal drugs has led to renewed interest in screening plants for novel biologically active compounds particularly to combat such ailments which have defied synthetics drugs. The herbal sector is under constant pressure to develop and deliver effective natural drugs. Phytochemical and pharmacological investigations have led to the isolation and characterization of a significant number of active molecules with versatile therapeutic efficacy. Biotechnology has emerged as the...

Objective: To perform the phytochemical screening and anticonvulsant activity of methanolic extract of leaves of Cinnamomum tamala (Buch.-Ham) T. Nees & Eberm. Method: The physicochemical parameter and in-vitro anticonvulsant study were done. The anticonvulsant activity of methanolic extract of leaves of Cinnamomum tamala (100 and 400 mg/kg, p.o) in Wistar rats was assessed by using the Maximal Electric Shock test. Result: The present study shows different physicochemical analysis which reveals the presence of various metabolites. The methanolic extract of Cinnamomum tamala (Buch.-Ham) T. Nees & Eberm significantly reduced the duration of seizure induced by maximal electric shock. The methanolic extract of leaves of Cinnamomum tamala (Buch.-Ham) T. Nees & Eberm in doses of 100 and 400mg/kg conferred protection (39.65% and 45.97% respectively) on a rat. Conclusion: The methanolic extract of leaves of Cinnamomum tamala (Buch.-Ham) T. Nees & Eberm possess anticonvulsant activity since it reduced the duration of seizures produced by maximal electric...

Diabetes mellitus is one of the widespread and severe metabolic disorders in humans all over the world. It is initially characterized by a loss of glucose homeostasis resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both resulting in impaired glucose metabolism and other energy-yielding fuels such as lipids and proteins. The association of hyperglycemia with altered lipid parameters presents a major risk for all cardiovascular diseases. In recent years, there has been an increased inclination towards herbal drugs due to the trend towards the natural sources and healthy lifestyle. The present study was designed to evaluate the potential antihyperlipidemic efficacy of Citrullus colocynthis roots in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by giving streptozotocin (35-50mg/kg) intraperitoneally. The aqueous and ethanolic root extracts of Citrullus colocynthis (AECC and EECC) were administered at a dose of 100, 200, 300 mg/kg orally. Metformin was given as a standard drug at a dose of 50mg/kg orally. The fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels were estimated by the glucose oxidase method....

Green synthesis is a cheaper, clean, nontoxic route for the synthesis of large scale nanoparticles without the use of high energy, pressure, temperature, and toxic chemicals. With the help of microbial enzyme and plant extract nanoparticles are easily synthesized by utilizing their antioxidant and reducing properties. In the present study, biosynthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles by utilizing Alhagi maurorum stem aqueous extract reducing capabilities was successfully done. Nanoparticles synthesized were characterized with the help of UV – VIS spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy (FTIR). UV – VIS spectroscopic analysis showed absorption maxima at 450 nm and 540 nm for silver (AgNP) and gold nanoparticles (AuNP) respectively. TEM study revealed that the silver and gold nanoparticles synthesized were in the range of 26-40 nm and possesses a crystalline structure having a nearly spherical shape. FTIR spectra of both AgNP and AuNP also confirmed the synthesis of nanoparticles and involvement of various reducing agent of plant extract. No change in the intensity of the AgNP...

Eugenia jambolana Lam., commonly known as black plum or “jamun” is an important medicinal plant in various traditional systems of medicine. It is effective in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, inflammation, ulcers and diarrhea, and preclinical studies have also shown it to possess chemopreventive, radioprotective and antineoplastic properties. The plant is rich in compounds containing anthocyanins, glucoside, ellagic acid, isoquercetin, kaemferol, and myricetin. The seeds are claimed to contain an alkaloid, jambosine, and glycoside jambolin or antimellin, which halts the diastatic conversion of starch into sugar. The present review has been primed to describe the existing data on the information on traditional and medicinal...
