Introduction: Samasarkara churna is the Ayurvedic medication preferred treatment of dyspepsia, loss of appetite and piles, formulated by mixing powder of cardamoms, long piper, black piper, flowers of Mesua ferrea, cinnamon and Sugar. Method: With the help of reported composition and standard procedure, formulated Samasarkara churna was compared with the market formulation. Efforts have been made to developed quality control parameters of Ayurvedic formulation Samasarkara churna by observing of organoleptic features, microscopical characters, and physicochemical properties. Results: Ash values and volatile oil content of standard and test sample were found to be 4.75, 2.25 and 0.2% w/v and 0.3% w/v respectively. Crude fiber content, pH of 1% w/v solution of churna and loss on drying were found to be (0.11, 0.34), (6.24, 6.29) and (0.7, 0.8) respectively. Calculated extractive values confirm that water-soluble contents are more in the Samasarkara churna. Discussion: After analyzing samples of Samasarkara churna by different parameters such as total ash, water, and alcohol soluble extractive values, lipid and volatile oil content, microscopic and phytochemical investigation...

Objective: To analyze the pharmacognostic characteristics and physiochemical parameters of the root of Eranthemum nigrum (E. nigrum). Methods: Microscopic characters and powder analysis had been carried out with the help of a microscope. The physiochemical properties such as loss on drying, total ash value, acid insoluble ash value, water-soluble ash value, extractive values and fluorescence of E. nigrum had been performed. Results: The color, shape, size, odor, and surface characteristics were reported from the root and powdered root material of E. nigrum. Light microscope images of cross section and powdered root revealed the presence of lignified xylem fibers, xylem vessels, cork cells, and parenchyma cells. Phytochemical testing confirmed the presence of steroids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, carbohydrates, glycosides, amino acids and proteins. Physicochemical parameters such as moisture content, ash value, extractive value and fluorescent behavior of root powder have also been established. Conclusion: The morphological, microscopical and physicochemical parameter results provided in this paper may be utilized as a basis for the preparation of a monograph on E. nigrum...

The plants are used to treat skin infection as well as cuts, burn, dermatophytes and infectious disease are common in traditional medicine. The development of new polyherbal dermal formulation treat against resistant pathogens is increasing interest. Therefore, the aqueous, methanolic extracts from different parts of four medicinal plants used locally in folk medicine were evaluated for wound healing, antimicrobial activity. Different types of aqueous plant extract potential to treat cuts, wounds, fungal infection without any adverse effect of plant extract. It was found that most plant extracts studied had antibacterial and antifungal activities. The extract showed significant activity against all tested bacteria and showed higher antifungal activity against E....

Curcuma is an important genus in traditional medicine. Five plants are reported in Sri Lanka; C. albiflora, C. aromatica, C. longa, C. zedoaria, and C. oligantha. Since the phylogenetic analysis of gene sequences and combining with complete genomic sequences helps to identify the genetic basis of plants, the current study was conducted. Standard CTAB method with little modifications was used for the extraction and purification. Extracted DNA was amplified using universal primers for matK genes in chloroplast genome by PCR (polymerase chain reaction). Sequenced fragments were analyzed and used for DNA barcoding. DNA barcodes {Accession Numbers: C. aromatica (GU180412), C. albiflora (KF 521885), C. longa (JQ409688), C. oligantha (JQ409715), C. zedoaria (JQ409703)} were used for analysis. C. albiflora appeared as a different group as per the Neighbor-Joining method and therefore, it can be identified as a new group. The matK gene of C. albiflora and other species showed, totally 222 variable sites. Therefore, the matK gene was an appropriate DNA barcode for identifying C. albiflora from remaining Curcuma plants...

Antigonon leptopus Hook & Arn. (family Polygonaceae), also called: chain of love, Queen’s wreath and Mexican creeper is a fast-growing vine with stems reaching up to 20 feet long. It has heart-shaped, green leaves climbing by tendrils which wrap around many types of supports. It is native to Mexico and commonly found in tropical Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas. It possesses anticoagulant activity, analgesic, antithrombin, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and anti-depressant activities. Aerial parts of the vine have been used as hepatoprotective and for spleen disorders. During the current study, the GC-MS experiment was conducted on both the methylene chloride and n-butanol fractions of the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of the vine. Results revealed the identification of total thirty-five (35) and thirty-seven (37) compounds respectively in both fractions examined. Compounds were characterized by their retention times, mass spectra with comparison to online mass bank database. The presence of flavonoids, phenolic acids, coumarins, and organic acids in both fractions examined may be responsible for its wide pharmacological...
