Baccaurea ramiflora, which is commonly known as Burmese grape, is a commonly used medicinal plant in South Asian folk medicine. They are potent in treating dermatological disorders and constipation. The study aims to investigate the possible biological activities of B. ramiflora by determination of antioxidant activities of total ethanolic extracts through the free radical scavenging activity over vitamin C and the antibacterial activity using the disk diffusion method. In-vitro antibacterial activity was evaluated against E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and S. aureus and Azithromycin was used as the reference compound. IC50 was found to be 27.57 and 13.66 µg/ml for B. ramiflora and vitamin C respectively, and the ethanolic plant seed extract exerted significant antibacterial activity at 500 µg, 1000 µg/disc concentration over the standard antibiotic drug which demonstrates the efficacy of B. ramiflora plant seeds...

Baccaurea ramiflora Lour., syn. Baccaurea sapida (Roxb.) Muell. Arg. known as Burmese grapes belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae and is native to Southeast Asia. The observance on Baccaurea ramiflora leads that this plant is utilized as an antichloristic and anodyne against rheumatoid arthritis, abscesses, cellulitis and treat injuries. This plant also has anti-diarrheal, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, neuro-pharmacological, antioxidant and cytotoxic activities. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate anthelmintic and insecticidal activities of different extract of Baccaurea ramiflora. For anthelmintic activity, Pheretima posthuma was selected as test animal while 25, 50, 100 mg/ml concentrations of samples were tested in the bioassay, from which time of paralysis and time of death of worms were estimated. Evaluation of insecticidal activity was performed against Sitophilus oryzae to calculate the mortality rate. Extracts of MEE, EE, ACE, CHE, PEE, and NHE were for the activity determination. In the anthelmintic study, extract exhibited its activity in a dose-dependent manner showing higher the concentration, faster the effect. Extract of EE, PEE, CHE and MEE in...

Garcinia pedunculata Roxb. ex. Buch.-Ham. (Family: Clusiaceae), is an evergreen potent medicinal plant with fluted trunk commonly known as Amlavethasa. It is used by various ethnic communities of North-East India to treat various ailments such as asthma, cough, jaundice, fever, dysentery and as a cardiotonic. The plant is considered to be containing much medicinal value and mature fruit, and tender leaves are also eaten raw and as vegetables by the local people. The plant has not been explored scientifically for its pharmacognostical details. Therefore, the study of morpho-anatomical characters, physicochemical analysis of G. pedunculata was undertaken to establish the pharmacognostic and phytochemical details about the plant. Macro and microscopical studies of leaf showed the presence of simple, petiolate leaf generally obovate-oblong, some elliptic and oblong with obtuse and sub-acute tip and paracytic stomata. Bicollateral vascular bundle covered with sclerenchymatous fibers in leaf and 8-10 layer of collenchyma, scattered pericyclic fiber, the arrangement of phloem in the ring form in stem are some diagnostic features noted from the anatomical study...

Vegetables are very rich in health-promoting phytochemicals like flavonoids and phenolic compounds. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of commonly used cooking (i.e., open and pressure cooking) methods on phytochemical content (i.e., polyphenols, flavonoids) and antioxidant activity levels as measured by DPPH and FRAP assay. Results showed that cooking methods have a great effect on phytonutrients and caused significant losses of flavonoids and increase in phenolics and antioxidant activity levels when compared with raw vegetables. Bitter gourd scored the highest mean value, 1033.8 mg GAE/100g, and drumstick scored the lowest mean value, 222.3 mg GAE/100g, for total phenolic content. The flavonoid content ranged between 14.18 to 91.7 mg RE/100g in the selected vegetables. There was a significant increase (p< 0.01% and p<0.05%) in antioxidant activity levels in vegetables upon both open and pressure...

Mango is the most popular fruit having excellent flavor, pleasant aroma, attractive color, and taste. It is a good source of vitamin A and C, TSS (total soluble solids) and minerals. It is also a medium source of carbohydrate. Their fruit has distinct physio-morphological characteristic features and composition variation. Phenolics are aromatic benzene ring compounds with one or more hydroxyl groups produced by plants mainly for protection against stress. Phenolics play important roles in plant development, particularly in lignin and pigment biosynthesis. Phenolic is among the major contributors that are accountable for antioxidant properties in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other plant-based materials. Hence in the present study, the phenolic acid analysis was done by HPTLC for comparison between three varieties at unripe and ripe stages. Three varieties, namely alphonso, kesar, and rajapuri were studied extensively for the phenolic acid variations. Phenolic acids occur naturally in plants and are their main polyphenols. In plants, they act as signaling molecules and agents of defense. In humans, these compounds act as...
