Genus Memecylon belonging to the family Melastomataceae is a large shrub or a small tree native to Western Ghats of India. Memecylon species are reported to show various biological activities and are also used as medication in herpes virus infection. RNases and proteases are involved in the replication of herpes simplex virus (HSV). The present study was taken up to screen RNase and protease (trypsin and thrombin) inhibitors in different solvent extracts of Memecylon species viz., M. umbellatum, M. malabaricum, M. wightii, M. edule and M. talbotianium. The methanol extract of the leaves of Memecylon species was observed to strongly inhibit RNase, trypsin, and thrombin functions in a dose-dependent manner. The percent inhibition of RNase activity ranged from 53-84% in 50 ug/mL of plant extracts. The highest inhibition was observed in M. malabaricum and M. wightii for RNase. Similarly, for trypsin the percent inhibition ranged from 55-68% in 1 mg/mL of plant extracts. Highest inhibition was observed in M. malabaricum, M. wightii, and M. talbotianium. For thrombin the percent...

Cervical cancer is a highly prevalent global disease among females and currently available treatments are nevertheless restricted and have substantial adverse effects. Plants may be a rich source of molecules with therapeutic potentials, such as Campomanesia aureas O. Berg, Myrtaceae, a native species from the South of Brazil with few data regarding its biological effects. In this study, we investigated the chemical composition and antineoplastic potential in-vitro of the essential oil (EO) of C. aureas leaves in human cervical cancer cells (SiHa), as well as its effect in the viability of non-tumoral cells (HaCat). CG-MS analysis reveals that the EO is rich in oxygenated sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes and MTT colorimetric assay shows that it significantly inhibits the viability of the SiHa cell line at different concentrations. Besides, the EO reduced the colony-forming capacity of the tumor cell line, and the ratio between the IC50 values of cell lines demonstrated a promising selectivity index for C. aurea EO. Therefore, the EO could be a potential source of new anticancer...

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anticancer activity of a series of six structurally related [1, 4]-Benzoquinone monooximes and to investigate structure-activity relationships (SAR) of these compounds. Materials and Method: The mono-oximes obtained by oximination of para-benzoquinones 1-4 had their structures confirmed by ¹H NMR, 13C NMR. The cytotoxic study was assessed by the MTT assay on three tumor cell lines: HL60 (promyelocytic leukemia), NCI-H292 (lung cancer), and MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma). Results: Six oximes were synthetized 2 – methyl-[1,4]-benzoquinone oxime tosylate (I), 5-isopropyl-2-mehyl-[1,4]-benzoquinone oxime tosylate (II), 5-isopropyl-5-mehyl-[1,4]-benzoquinone oxime tosylate (III), 5-isopropyl-2-mehyl-[1,4]-benzoquinone oxime (IV), 2,5-dimethyl-[1,4]-benzoquinone oxime tosylate (V), 2-methyl-[1,4]-benzoquinone oxime tosylate (VI). Compounds II to V showed significant activity against all cell lines; while compound I and VI presented low or no activity. Conclusion: These experimental data lead to the conclusion that oximes (II –V) may be used as potential starting structures for the design of novel anticancer...

The main objective of this present work is to evaluate the anthelmintic activity of crude alcohol extracts of the flowers of kachnar (Bauhinia variegata) against Pheretima posthuma as a test worm. The activity was assessed by worm motility assay, which involved the determination of time of paralysis and death of worms. The preliminary phytochemical study of the alcoholic extract was also carried out. The alcoholic extracts exhibited a dose-dependent (25, 50, and 100 mg/ml) inhibition of spontaneous motility and time of death of the worms. The alcoholic extract was found to be effective; the activity was comparable with the standard drug Piperazine citrate and water as a control....

Public interest on herbal drugs increase every passing day in both developed and developing countries. However, its regulations more strict in developed countries than in developing countries. Clarifying the effectiveness and adverse effects of this product is becoming more important. Calendula officinalis and Taraxacum officinale both commonly using in herbal-based therapies due to the speculated antibacterial and anti-cancer effects of them. Several effects of these plants have been associated with their ingredients, such as phytochemicals, flavonoids, essential oils, etc. In this study, we aimed to investigate antibacterial effects and potential anticancer effects of commercial Calendula officinalis and Taraxacum officinale products obtained from herbalist. Antibacterial effects of methanolic extracts of Calendula officinalis and Taraxacum officinale were evaluated via microbroth dilution technique using the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) recommendations. Anti-cancer effects were evaluated with the MTT cytotoxicity test on the human neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y). Our results indicate that commercial products show lower antibacterial effects separately and with 1:1 combination that was reported in previous different studies. It has been...
