Botanicals and herbal preparations for medicinal usage contain various types of bioactive compounds. The focus of this paper is on the analysis of bioactive compounds present in the Pisonea aculeata Linn. having anticancer activity involving the applications of chromatographic techniques such as TLC and column chromatography, Spectrophotometric techniques such as UV, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and EIMS spectral studies. The present investigation was carried out by fractionating the Methanolic extract of Pisonia aculeata (MPA) using benzene, diethyl ether, and ethyl acetate. Ethyl acetate fraction on concentration subjected to separation and purification on column chromatography. Fractions were collected & homogeneity was examined on TLC. A Fraction 77-90 on concentration yielded a pure yellowish homogeneous solid and gave dark green coloration with neutral ferric chloride and violet coloration with Molish’s reagent. In order to find out the nature of the glycoside, compound I was subjected to acid hydrolysis. The basic flavonoid structure of the compound studied by recording UV spectrophotometer showed an intense UV maxima at 273 nm (band II) and 329 nm...

Sesamum indicum seeds have been used as a medicine since antiquity. Various parts of the plant have been used by traditional physicians. However the dried seed and oil are commonly used as Till in Unani Medicine. It (Sesamum indicum) is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world, mainly grown for extraction of oil from seeds. Sesame belongs to the family Pedaliaceae and genus Sesamum, is a famous Indian drug used in a number of pathological conditions. The oil from sesame plant is an important ingredient in Unani remedies in India, because of the presence of bioactive components present in the seed including polyunsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols, tocopherols, vital minerals and unique class of phenylpropanoid compounds, namely lignans such as sesamin, sesamol, and sesamolin. Sesame lignans have various pharmaco-logical properties including. Antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity antiproliferative activity lowering cholesterol levels increasing hepatic fatty acid oxidation enzymes and show anti-hypertensive effects. This review is done to provide an electronic database regarding phyto-pharmacological properties of Sesamum indicum in particular with...

The study investigated the antibacterial properties of the water and ethanolic extracts of the seed of alligator pepper on two bacterial species, Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli, which are known human pathogens. The phytochemicals (alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, and phytates) in the seed extracts were estimated. The organisms were obtained from the microbiology laboratory of Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The antibacterial activity of the different concentrations of the extract (5 mgml-1, 10 mgml-1, 20 mgml-1, 30 mgml-1 and 50 mgml-1) were evaluated against the test organisms. Also, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined. Results showed that both the water and ethanolic extracts of the seed of the plant had inhibitory effects on the test organisms. Statistical analysis (ANOVA) demonstrated no significant difference (P=0.05) in the inhibitory effects of the extracts and the control on the organisms. It is concluded that both the water and ethanolic extracts of the seed have antibacterial properties and could be used in the treatment...

Arjuna is a well-known drug in Ayurveda. It is mainly used for heart disease, Obesity, and hemorrhagic disorders. It is used in various dosage form in Ayurveda such as powder, milk-based decoction, alcoholic fermented liquids, tablets, etc. Its bark is used for therapeutic purposes. Although it is widely available all over India, most of the time it is procured from the market; hence it needs to assure the quality of marketed Arjuna for standard quality formulations. Ayurvedic pharmacopeia of India (API) has given a monograph of Arjuna bark. So in this study, authentication, organoleptic, macroscopic, microscopic, and physicochemical analysis of a market sample of Arjuna was carried out. Organoleptic, macroscopic, microscopic studies have shown relatively similar characteristics as per standard. In physicochemical analysis, foreign (0.06%) matter was within normal range. Ash value (27.77%) was higher whereas acid insoluble ash (1.08%) almost matches with standard value, which shows more inorganic contents in Arjuna. Acid insoluble ash was nearly the same as a standard value. Water soluble extractive value (19.98 %)...

Achyranthes aspera Linn. belongs to the family Amaranthaceae is a perennial stiff, erect herb, 2.0 m high is growing up to 1000 m in height. Achyranthes aspera is a rough flowered stalk is described as in Sanskrit synonyms. The medicinal plants are used for the treatment of various diseases because of their safety and effectiveness. Though almost all of its parts are used in traditional systems of medicines, seeds, roots, and shoots are the most important parts which are used medicinally. The major chemical constituents are carbohydrates, protein, glycosides, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, flavonoids, lignin, etc. The review reveals that wide numbers of Phytochemical constituents have been isolated from the plant, which possesses activities like antiperiodic, diuretic, purgative, laxative, antiasthmatic, hepatoprotective, anti-allergic, and various other important medicinal properties. The plant is highly esteemed by traditional healers and used in the treatment of asthma, bleeding, in facilitating delivery, boils, cold, cough, colic, debility, dropsy, dog bite, dysentery, ear complications, headache, leucoderma, pneumonia, renal complications, scorpion bite, snake bite, and skin diseases,...
