Purpose: Dichlorvos (DDVP) causes toxicity in animals including humans. Alstonia boonei stem bark is widely used as a culinary medicine in the Ayurvedic system of medicine, possessing a number of pharmacological properties. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of Alstonia boonei (AB) against dichlorvos induced nephrotoxicity in Wistar rats. Methods: Dichlorvos (50 mg/kg body weight) was orally administered in Wistar rats for 14 days followed by the treatment of Alstonia boonei (200 and 400 mg/kg body weight) for 14 days. Changes in the kidney biochemical marker namely, glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities and levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), urea, and creatinine in the serum were estimated. Histological examinations of the kidney were monitored. Results: Exposure to dichlorvos lowered activities of kidney antioxidants, while it increased LPO levels. Levels of all disrupted parameters were alleviated by co-administration of AB extract. The malondialdehyde concentration of the rats treated with 200 and 400 mg/kg body weights of the extract significantly decreased (p<0.05) when...

Proper and normal functioning of the bodily process must be ensured in order to maintain perfect health. Any disturbance in the normal humoral balances whether it is excess, diminution or blockage leads to disease stated Avicenna (980-1037 A.D) the revered Greco Arabic physician and author of world-renowned treatise “Al Qanoon fit tib.” He has treated certain diseases by regulating metabolic processes through various modes of treatment. Regimental therapy is one such core method of treatment through which the morbid matter is eliminated or its excessive production is checked, or its spread is arrested and resolved by certain special techniques and thereby restoring humoral equilibrium. There are various forms of such therapy with details of its application. Purging is one such specialized method of regimental therapy through which deranged humor is eliminated from the body after proper administration of concoctive (Munzij). This therapeutic methodology is employed especially to combat certain ailments of sub-acute and chronic duration. The present communication is an attempt to highlight Regimental therapy with special reference to...

The ethanol leaves extract of Crotalaria pallida (Aiton) was evaluated to investigate the Phytochemical nature and some selected pharmacological activities. The plant extract indicated the presence of combined reducing sugar, tannins, flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids and steroids. The extract showed free radical scavenging activity with an IC50 value of 37.60 µg/ml, and standard ascorbic acid showed IC50 value of 16.95µg/ml. The total phenolics content (TPC) was found to be 14 ± 0.015 mg GAE/g of dried plant extract. Total flavonoids content was found to be 20.42 ± 0.001 mg QE / 100 g of dry extract. The extract showed mild antibacterial activity against the bacterial strains Vibrio cholera, Shigella flexneri, Shigella dysenteriae, in comparison with standard drug kanamycin (30 µg/disc). In the anthelmintic test, the extract showed a dose-dependent decrease in paralysis time and death time of worm Paramphistomum cervi (trematoda) when compared with standard albendazole. These results espouse the traditional use of the leaves of this...

Traditional herbal medicines include herbs, herbal materials, herbal preparations and finished herbal products that contain active ingredients parts of plants, or other plant materials, or combinations. Clinical trials of traditional herbal medicines are carried out with herbal preparations only after standardization and identification of markers to ensure that the substances being evaluated are always the same. It is very important to assess the direct and indirect risks associated with traditional herbal medicines. This can only be established once the safety and efficacy of herbal medicines are being proven during clinical trials. There are various concerns over the clinical trial designs in India. It has been observed that during clinical trials various problems are being observed such as Batch to batch variation, use of placebo instead of innovative product, inadequate quality control system, the inadequate requirement for the assessment of safety and efficacy for different types of herbal medicines and difficulty in quantification due to complex nature of extract. This review focuses on the current status of clinical trials of...
