Cadmium is a known nephrotoxic metal with other toxicities including pancytopenia. Telfairia occidentalis is a medicinal plant with antioxidant and chemoprotective properties. This study was carried out to investigate the ameliorating effects of aqueous extract of Telfairia occidentalison cadmium chloride-induced oxidative stress, renal damage and hematological alterations in rats. Twenty four (24) adult male rats were divided into 4 groups of 6 rats each. Group I received distilled water, group II, III, and IV were administered 5 mg/kg body weight CdCl2, group III; IV was treated with 200 and 400 mg/kg bw respectively of aqueous extract of Telfairia occidentalisfor 14 days while rats in group II were left untreated. Results obtained showed that administration of cadmium caused significant reduction in all the hematological parameters, reduced GSH, ascorbic acid, Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), Catalase (CAT), serum Sodium ion and bicarbonate ions as well as increase in MDA (malondialdehyde) level and serum level of potassium ion, serum urea, and creatinine. However, treatment with various doses of aqueous extract of...

Curcuma is an important genus used in Traditional Medicine in the world. Due to similar morphological characters and same Sinhalese vernacular names of Curcuma species, adulteration or substitution takes place. The current study was conducted to understand the similarities in morphological and microscopic characters by analyzing data using multivariate test on five species available in Sri Lanka; C. albiflora, C. aromatic, C. longa, C. oligantha, and C. zedoaria. Whole plants of Curcuma species were collected in 2016, from wet and dry zones of Sri Lanka. Voucher specimens of the plants were authenticated from National Herbarium, Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Morphological characters of five Curcuma species and microscopic characters of five Curcuma species using 5 observations of each plant were analyzed. An experiment was conducted as per WHO guidelines and other published data. Statistical tests were performed using Minitab 17. Multivariate test was used to determine the complex relationship among variables by simple correspondence analysis. Analyses examined the relationships between the 25 observations and the associations between variables in two dimensions...

Plants contain a galaxy of phytoconstituents which accounts for their remedial worth. This plant has been used expansively for its medicinal value all over the world. Different plant parts have been used for its different pharmacological screening, including cancer therapy and leaves can be wrapped to create the “beedi” filled with tobacco which has outsold conventional cigarettes in India. Extraction of plant material with organic solvent and elucidation of pure compounds using a different technique with the different solvent system are an extremely imperative limitation. Elucidation of pentacyclic triterpenoid, ursolic acid from D. melanoxylon and molecular mechanisms has vast chances for the development of enhanced therapy for different diseases, including cancer, and clinical studies. Our extensive intention of this study is to give a general delineate on the thyme D. melanoxylon and its cancer prevention potential, diverse pharmacological action, ethnomedicinal uses, and chemical compounds. We also focus the extraction methodology, elucidation, pharmacokinetic and various clinical trials of ursolic acid chiefly obtained from D....

Due to advances in drug delivery technology, currently, excipients are included in novel dosage forms to fulfill specific functions and in some cases; they directly or indirectly influence the extent and rate of drug release and drug absorption. Recent trends towards the use of plant-based and natural products demand the replacement of synthetic additives with natural ones. Today, the whole world is increasingly interested in natural drugs and excipients. These natural materials have many advantages over synthetic ones as they are chemically inert, nontoxic, less expensive, biodegradable, improve the shelf life of the product and widely available. This article gives an overview of natural excipients which are used in conventional dosage forms as well as novel drug delivery...

The present study was undertaken to evaluate antidiabetic and antioxidant activities of Aloe vera (A. vera, Ghee-kuwar; family: Liliaceae) extract against alloxan-induced diabetes in male adult Charles foster rats to scientifically validate its use against diabetes. A. vera extract and a standard drug (glibenclamide) prepared in aqueous gum acacia (2%, w/v) suspension and fed orally to alloxan induced diabetic rats for 30 days. Biochemical parameters in normal, diabetic control, standard (600 µg/kg bw p.o.) and treated (1 g/kg bw p.o.) animals group were determined and compared. Treatment of alloxan-induced diabetic rats with A. vera extract showed a significant reduction (p<0.001) in blood glucose, lipid peroxide and significantly increased (p<0.001) superoxide dismutase, catalase, and protein. Furthermore, the extract (100-200 µg) when tested for its antioxidant activity in-vitro, showed significant (p<0.001) inhibition in the generation of superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals. The results of the present study demonstrated anti-diabetic and anti-oxidant activities of A. vera extract which could help in the treatment of diabetes and related...
