As a source of remedies, medicinal plants are widely used as alternative medicines for the treatment or prevention of many diseases. Ficus hispida is traditionally used for treating diarrhoea, wounds, pain, inflammation, diabetes, fever, and neurological disorders. To evaluate the qualitative phytochemical constituents and antidiarrhoeal activity of methanolic extract of Ficus hispida leaves the present study was designed. Phytochemical constituents and anti-diarrhoeal activities were determined and assessed by various tests such as Molisch’s test, Fehling test, Mayer’s test, frothing test, FeCl3 test, alkali test, Salkowski’s test, Keller-killiani test and CuSO4 test, castor oil, and MgSO4 induced diarrheal test. This extract figured the presence of carbohydrates, flavonoids, tannins, glycosides, triterpenoids, fat and fixed oils. Moreover, both doses of (200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg) methanolic extract of Ficus hispida leaves significantly (p<0.05, vs. control) reduced the gastrointestinal motility and inhibited the percentage of diarrhoea in antidiarrhoeal models. The emergence of anti-malarial resistant parasites has posed a serious threat to the control and elimination of malaria. Therefore, there is a need for an alternative drug that is highly efficacious, affordable and safer for the treatment of malaria; hence, interest is now on the use of herbal medicine to treat malaria. Ogidi community in the Anambra State of Nigeria depends mainly on plants for the treatment of malaria. Bixa orellana plant, belonging to the family Bixaceae, is a very popular medicinal plant in Nigeria where it is used to treat malaria, jaundice, diarrhoea, dysentery, hypertension, as well as diabetes. The ethnomedicinal use against malaria prompted this investigation on the anti-plasmodial activity of the leaf of Bixa orellana. Hypertension is a common clinical problem encountered in day-to-day practice. The aim of the present work was to investigate the anti-diarrheal and diuretic potentials of Tabernaemontana divaricata Linn. leaves of the family Apocynaceae. In almost all tropical developing countries of the world, diarrhoea is one of the most common and serious diseases, the principal cause of morbidity and mortality among children under five years. Ficus polita leaves have been used in traditional medicines to increase physical strength, work productivity and longevity, resistance to high altitude sickness, fatigue, depression, anemia, gastrointestinal ailments, infections, and nervous system disorders. The objective of this study was to evaluate the analgesic activity of hydromethanolic extract of F. polita leaves in rats using acetic acid-induced writhing and tail flick immersion methods. The phytochemical screening of the extract revealed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, terpenoids, glycosides, resins, steroids, balsams and pholobatannins. Acute oral toxicity study resulted in no mortality after oral administration of 3000 mg/kg of the extract. Based on the tail flick immersion test, Ficus polita hydromethanolic leaves extract and the standard drug, diclofenac showed significant (P<0.05) analgesic activity by prolonging the mean latency time when compared to the control.
