Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder of multiple etiologies characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. As morbidity and mortality rate from diabetes is increasing on the one hand and the cost of modern medicine is getting higher on the other in low – and middle – income countries, it is necessary to evaluate medicinal plants for their potential therapeutic effects against diabetes. The present study was, therefore, undertaken to evaluate the hypoglycemic and anti-hyperglycemic activity of the leaf extracts of Psidium guajava in normoglycemic and streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice, respectively. Materials and Methods: The aqueous and ethanol extracts of Psidium guajava leaves were prepared following standard procedures. Swiss albino mice of either sex weighing 20-30 grams were used for the experiments. Normal mice were grouped into eight groups to carry out the hypoglycemic effect of the extracts, whereas mice that were made diabetic were grouped into nine groups to study the antihyperglycemic effect of the extracts. The present study was investigated to establish the diuretic and antiurolithiatic activities of chloroform and ethanolic leaf extract of Melochia corchorifolia. The chloroform and ethanolic leaf extract were administered to experimental rats orally at a dose of 200 mg/ kg and 400 mg/kg. Furosemide (5 mg/kg) was used as reference standard for diuretic activity. The parameters measured for diuretic activity was total urine volume; urine electrolyte concentrations such as sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonates. In the in-vitro antiurolithiatic activity, Calcium oxalate crystallization was induced by the addition of 0.01M sodium oxalate solutions in synthetic urine. The effect of chloroform and ethanolic leaf extract of Melochia corchorifolia (100, 200 and 500 μg/ml) was studied by time course measurement of absorbance at 620 nm for ten minutes using a spectrophotometer. Cadmium is a known nephrotoxic metal with other toxicities including pancytopenia. Telfairia occidentalis is a medicinal plant with antioxidant and chemoprotective properties. This study was carried out to investigate the ameliorating effects of aqueous extract of Telfairia occidentalison cadmium chloride-induced oxidative stress, renal damage and hematological alterations in rats. Twenty four (24) adult male rats were divided into 4 groups of 6 rats each. Group I received distilled water, group II, III, and IV were administered 5 mg/kg body weight CdCl2, group III; IV was treated with 200 and 400 mg/kg bw respectively of aqueous extract of Telfairia occidentalisfor 14 days while rats in group II were left untreated. Curcuma is an important genus used in Traditional Medicine in the world. Due to similar morphological characters and same Sinhalese vernacular names of Curcuma species, adulteration or substitution takes place. The current study was conducted to understand the similarities in morphological and microscopic characters by analyzing data using multivariate test on five species available in Sri Lanka; C. albiflora, C. aromatic, C. longa, C. oligantha, and C. zedoaria. Whole plants of Curcuma species were collected in 2016, from wet and dry zones of Sri Lanka. Voucher specimens of the plants were authenticated from National Herbarium, Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Morphological characters of five Curcuma species and microscopic characters of five Curcuma species using 5 observations of each plant were analyzed.
