The present study was undertaken to provide the rationale for the use of Terminalia bellirica as an anti-inflammatory agent using carrageenan-induced inflammation and antiulcer agent using ethanol-acid induced gastric mucosal injury model in the Swiss albino rats. The anti-inflammatory activity of the extract was evaluated using carrageenan (1% w/v) induced inflammation model at doses of 50, 120 and 300 mg/kg, p.o while using ibuprofen (20 mg/kg, p.o) as the standard drug. On the other hand, the antiulcer activity of methanolic extract of T. bellirica leaves at the doses of 100, 250 and 500 mg/kg, p.o. were examined against ethanol-acid induced gastric mucosal injury in the Swiss albino rats – keeping omeprazole (20 mg/kg, p.o.) as the reference. The rats were dissected, and their stomachs were macroscopically examined to identify hemorrhagic lesions in the glandular mucosa. Further, the histopathological changes of paws and stomachs were analyzed. T. bellirica significantly (P<0.01) decreased carrageenan-induced paw edema; it exhibited a reduction of 50.00%, 55.88% and 61.76% at doses of 50, 120 and 300 mg/kg respectively. The methanolic extract also...

The plant Soymida febrifuga is called as Mamsaroyini in Sanskrit. It is an important medicinal plant belongs to family Meliaceae. This plant has got the traditional and ethnomedicinal significance. This is commonly used for Anti-inflammatory and also for joint pain, for cattle it is used for easy placental expulsion in the tribal areas of North-eastern Karnataka. Keeping its medicinal significance in a view, the present study is focused on phytochemical and pharmacognostic studies, and results show the presence of secondary metabolites such as phenols, flavonoids, triterpenes, lactones, tannins, saponins, alkaloids which in turn may be the responsible for its medicinal...

Diabetes mellitus (DM), both type I and type II, is a common metabolic disorder worldwide. It is characterized by hyperglycemia, lipid, and protein metabolism abnormalities, and accompanied by several clinical complications including retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy. Many traditional herbs have been used for the treatment of DM. In the present review, we showed a list of these herbs describing their growth area, anti-diabetic properties, their active constituent, and mechanism of action. From the review, the anti-diabetic activity of herbs is largely attributed to the presence of polyphenols, flavonoids, terpenoids, and coumarins. Also, this review strongly suggests these herbs as a natural and safe alternative treatment to the regularly used chemical anti-diabetic...

It is known that Eclipta alba Hassk. (Family: Compositae) contains coumestans (Wedelolactone and dimethyl wedelolactone) are used in liver disorders. The objective of the present investigation was to develop a novel formulation of these coumestans in combination with the soya phosphatidylcholine (PC), to overcome the limitation of absorption and to investigate the protective effect of the coumestans-phosphatidylcholine complex (C-PC) on carbon tetrachloride-induced acute liver damage in rats. Methanolic extract (ME) of the whole plant of Eclipta alba was fractionated with water and then with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate fraction of methanolic extract (EFME) contains coumestans which were characterized by chemical tests. EFME and PC prepared the C-PC. FT-IR and DSC spectroscopy characterized the C-PC. In-vitro drug release from EFME and C-PC through egg membrane was performed using UV-Visible spectrophotometer. The hepatoprotective activity of C-PC (Equivalent to 5.35 and 10.7 mg/kg body weight of EFME), ME 250 mg/kg and EFME 5.35 mg/kg were evaluated on various enzymes level. C-PC significantly provided better protection to the liver by restoring the...

Holostemma ada kodien is one of the potential indigenous medicinal plants belonging to the family Asclepiadaceae distributed through the south Indian region. Traditionally, it is used for a laxative, ulcer treatment, blood purifier, itching, leucoderma, gonorrhea. The most important medicinal uses of the plant are Antipyretic, antioxidant, anti-diabetics, hepatoprotective. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anthelmintic activity of macerated ethanolic extracts of roots. Preliminary phytochemical investigation show the presence of Alkaloids, phenols, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, steroids, anthocyanins. The data revealed that the ethanolic extract showed anthelmintic activity at concentration 50 mg/ml. The paralysis time and death time of ethanolic extract was found to be less than that of standard drug. Allopathic drugs have serious side effect development of resistance; the herbal remedies can be a superior alternative for...
