Garcinia pedunculata Roxb. ex. Buch.-Ham. (Family: Clusiaceae), is an evergreen potent medicinal plant with fluted trunk commonly known as Amlavethasa. It is used by various ethnic communities of North-East India to treat various ailments such as asthma, cough, jaundice, fever, dysentery and as a cardiotonic. The plant is considered to be containing much medicinal value and mature fruit, and tender leaves are also eaten raw and as vegetables by the local people. The plant has not been explored scientifically for its pharmacognostical details. Therefore, the study of morpho-anatomical characters, physicochemical analysis of G. pedunculata was undertaken to establish the pharmacognostic and phytochemical details about the plant. Macro and microscopical studies of leaf showed the presence of simple, petiolate leaf generally obovate-oblong, some elliptic and oblong with obtuse and sub-acute tip and paracytic stomata. Vegetables are very rich in health-promoting phytochemicals like flavonoids and phenolic compounds. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of commonly used cooking (i.e., open and pressure cooking) methods on phytochemical content (i.e., polyphenols, flavonoids) and antioxidant activity levels as measured by DPPH and FRAP assay. Results showed that cooking methods have a great effect on phytonutrients and caused significant losses of flavonoids and increase in phenolics and antioxidant activity levels when compared with raw vegetables. Bitter gourd scored the highest mean value, 1033.8 mg GAE/100g, and drumstick scored the lowest mean value, 222.3 mg GAE/100g, for total phenolic content. The flavonoid content ranged between 14.18 to 91.7 mg RE/100g in the selected vegetables. A simple TLC method has been developed for the simultaneous quantification of bergenin using HPTLC plate precoated with silica gel 60 F254. The method was developed in toluene: ethyl acetate: acetone (2:4:4 v/v) toluene: ethyl acetate: formic acid (4:6:1, v/v) and validated in terms of precision, repeatability, and accuracy. This study evaluated the scientific basis for the traditional use of Aegiceras corniculatum (Myrsinaceae) stem extract as an anthelmintic agent. The study design was an investigation of the traditional anthelmintic medicinal plant Aegiceras corniculatum using in-vitro anthelmintic properties of four extracts of the plant were evaluated using earthworms. The earthworm (Pheretima posthuma) resembles both anatomically and physiologically to the intestinal roundworm parasites of human beings. The four crude stem extracts of Aegiceras corniculatum were petroleum ether extract (50 & 100 mg/ml), chloroform extract (50 & 100 mg/ml), methanol extract (50 & 100 mg/ml) and aqueous extract (50 & 100 mg/ml). The paralysis time of petroleum ether extract (96 ± 6.33 & 76 ± 2.31), chloroform extract (116 ± 4.36 & 92 ± 7.50), ethanol extract (62 ± 3.20 & 34 ± 3.52) and aqueous extract (200 ± 2.22 & 180 ± 3.19) were compared to the standard drug Albendazole suspension 100mg / 5ml (5 ± 1.00).
