BERGENIN – AN ACTIVE CONSTITUENT OF RIVEA ORNATA ROXB. AND ITS ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTY
AbstractA simple TLC method has been developed for the simultaneous quantification of bergenin using HPTLC plate precoated with silica gel 60 F254. The method was developed in toluene: ethyl acetate: acetone (2:4:4 v/v) toluene: ethyl acetate: formic acid (4:6:1, v/v) and validated in terms of precision, repeatability, and accuracy. The isolated compounds were characterized using spectroanalytical techniques and found to be bergenin. The in-vitro antioxidant activity of the isolated compound was determined. For the antioxidant potential, two standard analytical protocols, namely, DPPH radical scavenging activity (RSA) and ferric reducing antioxidant power were adopted. The results showed that the compound was found to be a more potent antioxidant.
