India is well known as the emporium of medicinal plants harboring many plants of medicinal importance, of which Curculios orchioides is one that has been reported to possess medicinal importance for the treatment of various diseases traditionally as well as scientifically. An attempt was made herein to undertake a detailed pharmacognostical and preliminary phytochemical investigation of the root tubers of Curculigo orchioides Gaertn. for the first time. The pharmacognostic study comprises of the taxonomical characters of the root tubers of Curculigo orchioides, histochemical tests, and diagnostic characters. The phytochemical analysis consists of the determination of physicochemical constants, fluorescence analysis, and preliminary organic analysis. The diagnostic characters of the plant showed that the leaves are radical with parallel venation while flowers are solitary, trimerous, and ovary inferior. These parameters help in the standardization of the crude drug and in formulating Pharmacopoeial standards for the crude drug. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the crude drug showed the presence of carbohydrates and glycosides, phytosterols, fixed oils and fats, phenolic compounds and tannins, saponins,...

Aqueous and ethanol ethyl acetate chloroform-methanol extracts from the leaves of Ricinus communis were investigated for their anthelmintic activity against Pheretima posthuma and three concentrations (50, 75 and 100 mg/ml) of each extract were studied for activity, in which paralysis and death time of the worm. Both the extract exhibited remarkable anthelminthic activity at all three concentrations. Albendazole suspension is used as standard reference (20 mg/ml) and distilled water as control. Therefore the aqueous and ethanol methanol extract of leaves of Ricinus communis has been demonstrated for the first...

Background: There are very less therapeutic and reliable liver protective drugs in modern medicine to prevent and treat the liver injury caused due to drugs. Traditionally Solanum xanthocarpum Schradt. (SX) and Wendl. and Juniperus communis Linn. (JC) have been used since long for their hepatoprotective effect. The current study was carried out to explore the hepatoprotective role of SX and JC against liver toxicity in rodents induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Materials and Methods: The antioxidant potential of hydroalcoholic extract of SX and JC were investigated by using established DPPH in-vitro assay method. The hydroalcoholic extract of SX and JC at doses (200 and 400 mg/kg b.w.) were studied for their liver protective activity against hepatic damage induced by CCl4 in Wistar rats. An assay of the oxidative stress parameters, alkaline phosphatase, transaminase, total bilirubin, albumin and liver histopathology were performed to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of SX and JC. The assay results were introduced as the standard error ofthe mean (SEM) for each group. Results: The ethanolic extract...

The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the methanol extract of Amomum masticatorium rhizome were observed in various experimental models. Phytochemical constituents like phenols and flavonoids were also estimated. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH and superoxide radical scavenging assays. The extract showed significant antioxidant activity. The in-vitro anti-inflammatory activity of the extract was investigated by various methods viz. albumin denaturation, membrane stabilization, and proteinase inhibitory assays. Results showed that the extract exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the heat-induced albumin denaturation with IC50 value 34.15 ± 0.404µg/ml, effectively stabilized RBC membrane with an IC50 value of 51.47 ± 1.56 µg/ml and significantly inhibited proteinase activity with an IC50 value of 52.8 ± 0.61µg/ml. In-vivo activity was evaluated in carrageenan and formalin-induced paw edema test in mice and compared with that of standard drug diclofenac. In both models, the extract showed a significant reduction in edema. The extract at 200 mg/kg b. wt showed a significant reduction in carrageenan-induced paw edema at a 3rd h and chronic edema on...

The extracts of two different plant were screened for their phenols, flavonoid and antioxidant activity by DPPH method for two locations. In this study seed oil and defatted seed cake extracts of M. azedarach and P. pinnata from two locations indicate high phenolics (13.5-51.2 mgGAE/g) and flavonoids content (1.5-4.2 mgCAE/g). The IC50 value was (0.032-0.048...
