Cissus quadrangularis Linn. is a succulent plant of family Vitaceae commonly found in tropical and subtropical xeric wood. It is a fleshy, cactus-like liana widely used as a common food item in India. The plant is prescribed in the ancient Ayurvedic literature as a general tonic and analgesic, with specific bone fracture healing properties. The plant is believed to be useful in helminthiasis, anorexia, dyspepsia, colic, flatulence, skin diseases, leprosy, hemorrhage, epilepsy, convulsion, hemoptysis, tumors, chronic ulcers, swellings. Following various folk claims for the cure of various diseases, efforts have been made by researchers to verify the efficacy of the plant through scientific biological screening. The scrutiny of literature revealed some notable pharmacological activities of the plant such as antioxidant, free radical scavenging, antimicrobial, antibacterial, bone healing, antiulcer, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and diuretic, presented in this review such that the potential use of the plant either in pharmaceutics or as an agriculture resource can be evaluated. The present review is an attempt to highlight phytochemicals, various traditional uses as well...

Garlic is one of the earliest well known medicinal plants, which used to cure different disease in a human being. It used to fight infections, prevent cancer, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anthelmintic, anti- antioxidant, and wound healing. Based on the above important of garlic, this study was conducted to investigate the antibacterial activity of garlic extracts (ethanol, acetone and aqueous extracts) against bacterial strains. The antibacterial activity of garlic was tested against gram-positive Bacillus subtitles and gram-negative E. coli bacterial strains by using agar well diffusion method. The results reveal that garlic extract shows inhibitory activity against gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis and gram-negative E. coli bacterial strains. The maximum zone of inhibitions observed against Bacillus subtilis with the combination (32 mm), aqueous (30 mm), ethanol (26 mm), and acetone (22 mm) extracts, respectively. Minimum inhibition zone was observed in all extracts against Gram-negative Bacteria (E. coli), i.e. combination (21 mm), aqueous (16 mm), ethanol (14 mm), and acetone (12 mm). The results showed that B. subtilus is more susceptible to garlic...

Infertility is one of the most extremely tragic all over the world. Despite recent advances in the treatment of male infertility, the problem has not been satisfactorily tackled. The male infertility is mainly due to an inadequate number of spermatozoa in the semen, the failure of the spermatozoa to move with sufficient vigor towards their goal. Herbal medicines have been broadly used in developed countries hence they are natural and comparatively safe. They contain plant materials as their pharmacologically active components. The aim of the study is to evaluate the acute and sub-acute toxicity of the spermatogenic Siddha drug Magizhampattai Chooranam (MPC). For acute studies, different doses of MPC were administered orally to rats once daily for one week. For sub-acute studies, different doses of IC were administered orally to rats once daily for 28 days in various doses at 250, 500, 1000 mg/kg of body weight. Detailed hematological, biochemical, necropsy and Histopathological evaluation of organs were performed for all animals. Histopathological analysis revealed that Spleen, Testes, Pancreas, Lung,...

Desmostachya bipinnata (L.) Stapf [Gramineae (Poaceae)] is used in Indian traditional medicines system for treatment of various diseases such as asthma, kidney stone, diarrhea, wound healing, etc. These traditional claims require authentication by performing animal testing. This study aims to confirm the antidiarrheal activity of D. bipinnata in Wistar rats. Underground parts of D. bipinnata was extracted in alcohol, water, a hydroalcoholic solution, chloroform, and ethyl acetate. Acute toxicity test was performed in albino mice and antidiarrheal activity was estimated in Wistar rats. Castor oil and magnesium sulfate-induced diarrhea in Wistar rats were treated with single oral administration of prepared D. bipinnata extracts (500 mg/kg) and antidiarrheal drug loperamide (3 mg/kg). Diarrhoeal droppings were observed for 6 h in all treated animals. One way ANOVA followed by Dunnet’s ‘t’ test was used to identify significant differences among obtained results. Extracts of D. bipinnata showed neither mortality nor any toxic effect in albino mice up to the dose of 5 g/kg in 48 h to 14 days. The alcohol extract of...
